Fantastic Location
Law Undergraduate teaching is based at the Mile End Campus, (main Queen Mary campus) which is a peaceful, secure and friendly environment only a few yards from the bustle of Mile End Road, with landscaped squares and a host of facilities together on one site: cafés, bars and restaurants, the Students' Union, canal-side accommodation in our Student Village, bank and bookshop.
Mile End itself is only two stops on the central line from Liverpool Street Station, which is the heart of the financial and business district in central London in zone one. In between the campus and the businesses you can find the lively, bustling areas of Shoreditch and Bethnal Green which are fantastic for food, bars, clubs, shopping and diverse markets. Twenty minutes by bus in the other direction and you will find yourself in Canary Wharf, which you can actually see from the campus –The impressive UK headquarters for many banks and businesses. For those of you interested in sports, Mile End is only one stop away from the site of the forthcoming Olympic Village in Stratford, which is part of a multi-billion pound regeneration programme leading to the 2012 Olympics.
Undergraduate Support
Within the School of Law it is easy for students to seek advice from staff on an informal basis, as every member of staff has office hours during which they are available to students. In addition, all students have a personal tutor, who monitors academic progress and is the first point of contact if there are problems –academic or personal. Extensive feedback is given –directly when written work is returned and also in the form of internal reports between members of staff which are designed to ensure that any problems are picked up and acted upon quickly.
Legal Writing Programme
All first year law students are offered a short Legal Writing Programme to help them be self-aware and self reflective about the study of law and, in particular, to acquire the sort of analytic and critical skills that they need to undertake law courses. In the foundation course in the first week of term they receive lectures on case law, common law, statutory interpretation, human rights and access to justice, as well as one about legal writing. They are set a legal writing exercise and receive feedback both individually and in two classes set aside to discuss legal writing, and the skills associated with it: an understanding of legal method, precedent, statutory interpretation, legal research, etc.
Graduate Student Advisors
In addition to their academic personal tutors, students can also get help and advice from our Graduate Student Advisors, current Queen Mary School of Law Postgraduate students who offer support and advice either on a one to one basis or in groups on matters including:
- Study Skills
- Exam Techniques
- Careers and CVs
- Time Management
- Dealing with essay/exam questions
- Work/life balance
- Debt issues
Recent successful group presentations have included ‘Dealing with Exams’, ‘Work/Life Balance’ and ‘Organising Notes’.
In cases where students need additional support, the GSAs refer students on to the College’s Central Services, for more specific guidance on matters such as dyslexia, financial issues [new window],counselling services[new window].
The GSAs are available for 3 hours per day, for 4 days a week and can be contacted by:
Phone: +44 (0)20 7882 7555
email: law-gsa@qmul.ac.uk
Alternatively, students can just drop by Room 217 of the Law Department
College Support
The Queen Mary College Advice and Counselling Service is also available, and can help with finance advice and support with personal problems. All students can register with the College Health Centre too. This offers information, advice and guidance on a range of practical issues including financial problems related to study costs and international students issues. Queen Mary also offers a Counselling Service which is free and confidential to any registered student. Support for mature students is also offered and further information on all these services can be found on the Advice and Counselling Service web pages.
Accommodation
Queen Mary offers the best of both worlds: the advantages of life in the capital with the convenience and economy of a developing residential area of London. As the only University of London College having a central London campus location, Queen Mary offers Residence Halls overlooking the Regent's Canal and an extensive new student village. The Guardian education correspondent describes the campus and accommodation thus: "You quickly find yourself in a perfectly laid out, and brand new, student village. It has shops, restaurants, open green spaces...I've been allocated a spotless single, with ensuite bathroom, shared kitchen, and a view over Regent's Canal and the 90acres of Mile End park. The bed is comfy, the shower more power than drippy and I have clean towels and internet access. It is certainly a far cry from the university halls of my youth". Forget camping, try campus: The Guardian, Tuesday July 25, 2006
Career Opportunities
Our success is founded on attracting the best students and nurturing their talent. We therefore aim to enable you to become the best you can be, both professionally and personally. The School of Law is not only committed to delivering the highest quality academic experience, we also work to facilitate a breadth of extracurricular activity that supports your professional and personal needs.
We offer an extensive careers development programme, which includes partnerships with law firms such as Reed Smith, Field Fisher Waterhouse, Mishcon de Reya, Nabas Legal, Allen & Overy, Eversheds and Denton Wilde Sapte.
The School of Law organises career focused workshops in areas such as commercial awareness, online applications, interview skills and choosing the right LPC and BPTC provider.
Workshop highlights for 2010-11 include:
- Job Applications Training led by Mayer Brown
- Interviews Skill Workshop led by Eversheds Assessment Centre Training
- Assessment Centre Training led by Berwin Leighton Paisner LLP
- Life as Solicitor - Panel including Freshfields and Trowers & Hamlins
- Commercial Awareness Workshop led by Baker McKenzie
- Barristers’ Networking Evening – various chambers represented
- Insight into Advocacy Workshop - led by the College of Law
Of course, not all Law graduates decide to pursue a legal career. Some students pursue postgraduate study, or take up highly successful, well paid non-legal careers in academia, accountancy, banking and finance, management consultancy, public administration and the civil service. For students not seeking a career in law, the Queen Mary College Careers Service runs sessions at which employees in tax, banking and related fields will be invited to speak and give advice to students.
All Department of Law students are able to use the Careers Service free of charge throughout their studies. They provide information on a range of career options, as well as advice on interview techniques, helpful tips on completing application forms, etc.
Students can also benefit from the full range of careers seminars, fairs and employer presentations organised throughout the year for all Queen Mary undergraduates. These involve industry experts who provide useful information on applying and careers in their sectors.
Final year law students are invited to visit the Postgraduate Law School located in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, where the Centre for Commercial Law Studies is also based, to meet current LLM students and staff who teach on the postgraduate programmes.
Thanks to the extensive links that our academic staff have with law firms, chambers and industry, the LLM Programme benefits from the contribution of numerous QCs, Judges, Partners and industry experts, providing excellent opportunities for students to network and gain practical advice.
Every autumn, students from the entire School of Law have the chance to meet staff from leading law firms and law colleges at the 'Queen Mary Law Fair’ organised by the Careers Service. Details of the October 2010 Fair, including exhibitors, can be found atwww.careers.qmul.ac.uk
Get involved with the Law outside the class!
We are renowned for being friendly and welcoming. A fifth of our intake are international students. In common with Queen Mary's reputation for friendliness, the School of Law fosters a sense of community, both in staff-student relations and in the many student societies and activities.
We have an enthusiastic Law Society, which arranges educational and social events. You may also decide to become involved in the Queen Mary Law Journal, the Law Society Magazine 'Queens Counsel', the Students' Union and/or the annual Mooting Competition. Mooting - the argument of hypothetical cases under simulated court conditions - is an interesting and entertaining foretaste of law in action. The Criminal Justice Association and the debating society also provide a stimulating range of speakers and meetings.
Many other groups and activities are available in the College: sporting, cultural, social and religious societies abound. The Law Society helps with careers advice, and assistance is also given in obtaining training contracts and mini-pupillages.
